Frequently Asked Questions

General FAQs

  • What is ‘body composition’ and why do I want it measured?

Body composition is quite simply, the balance of what makes up your body mass. This is comprised mostly of water (around 65%), your skeleton, muscles and fat and can be calculated in total mass (kg), or as a percentage of your total weight.

The InBody scan from bioXscan measures these things and many more, so you get an accurate, measurable, comparable picture of your health.

  • What is InBody?

The InBody Body Composition Analysers contain some of the latest technology available for effective, reliable and accurate, non-invasive, body composition testing.

The InBody body composition analysers use bioelectrical impedance analysis with 8-points of tactile electrodes including thumb technology, to analyse a persons body composition as it is on the day of testing. It’s accurate across a broad range of population from overweight people, muscular people, children, elderly and athletes to name a few. It provides a detailed report outlining an individual’s measurements in such things as but not limited to:

    • Total skeletal muscle mass
    • Total body fat
    • Body fat percentage
    • Visceral fat level
    • Total body water
    • Segmental muscle and fat analysis
    • Bone mineral content
    • Basal metabolic rate
  • How does it work?

It Measures Your Body Parts Individually Instead Of As A Whole.

The technical term for this is Direct Segmental Multi-frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (DSM-BIA). It separately measures the impedance (resistance to alternating electric currents) of the trunk, arms, and legs of the body.

This technology is patented worldwide and makes a huge difference to the accuracy of your scan results.

Cheaper, less effective devices simply measure the whole body as one single cylinder and no machine has 8 separate contact points like the InBody machine does.

If you would like a full description of how the InBody machine works, you can download the PDF by requesting one here.

  • Is it accurate? Why is this machine so good?

The simple answer is yes. Find out below why it’s so good.

    1. The Science

The InBody570 is a leading body composition analyzer in the market. It is internationally recognized for its precision and reproducibility. It is relied upon by leading research universities, hospitals, and professional health institutions and practitioners as a key medical device.

It is backed by over 50 patents and certifications worldwide as well as many scientific research reports written about its uses and accuracy.

The very same machine that we use here at bioXscan – the InBody570, won the prestigious Red Dot Award for Product Design in 2014.

We reckon that’s evidence enough that we’re onto a winner and that’s why we are so excited to make it available to you.

    2. It measures YOU, it doesn’t ‘average’ you out.

Unlike some other machines, InBody uses raw data as measured on the day. What this means is that our machine calculates your actual body composition on the spot – providing you with excellent information and personalized results. InBody does not use averages in its calculations based on gender, age, ethnicity or body type. It simply gives a detailed reading of your body – now.

If we rescanned a 23-year-old female as a 57-year-old male, the body composition information would largely be the same across both scans (this is good as it’s not putting you ‘in a box’). We are not required to ‘choose’ your body type before the scan is done to aid in it’s analysis. We simply enter your age, gender and height – however this doesn’t influence your raw readings, only the suggested brackets.  We know you’re unique and special and you deserve to be treated that way.

    3. The InBody unique 8-point tactile electrode system

InBody uses 8 contact points – heels, forefoot, thumb and palm on each side. This 8-point system is patented to InBody.

The electrical current is passed between the eight contact points creating highly reproducible data. Reproducible data means it’s accurate time and time again so you can be sure that changes from scan to scan are actually happening in your body.

  • How long does it take?

The InBody570 scan is complete in under a minute and then you will get a 5 – 10 minute personal interpretation session with your qualified body composition expert.

  • What if I am embarrassed or shy?

You can relax. We have scanned all body shapes, sizes and ages. We understand that everyone is on a journey and some of you are right at the beginning and we feel privileged and honored to be a part of that. We operate in a 100% judgment free zone and we don’t talk about or share your scan with anyone without your permission.

We interpret your scan as it is. Plain and simple.

  • How does bioXscan interpret my results?

Your scan will be printed within seconds. The machine simply reports what it has measured and displays it in numbers and on graphs. We have been trained to recognize various patterns and nuances within the scan data so your interpretation will be personal and you will leave with a good understanding of what the various measures mean. If you wish to find out more, you can read the interpretation guide in your own time.

  • Why should I get my scan done with the bioXscan team?

Not only are we InBody body composition experts, we also come armed with a wealth of knowledge about what it takes to change your body composition. We are athletes; fitness competitors and our own science experiments. We carefully track our own composition for optimum performance and our brain is yours for the picking.

Note: We do not prescribe or specify particular eating plans nor diagnose any medical conditions. Our information is for general use only. For any particular concerns you should see your medical doctor or health care professional.

  • How often should I have a scan?

This depends on how much you are changing in terms of your lifestyle and how quickly. Every 4 – 8 weeks is a guideline but some people get scans 3 weeks later and others wait 12 weeks or longer. Some scanners may choose to have an annual scan just to keep an eye on things. It’s really up to you!

If you’re making slow and steady changes, you may not see significant changes if you return too soon so more like every 6 to 8 weeks is probably sufficient.

If you’re in hard training or have made drastic improvements to your nutrition, then you will see more results in fewer weeks, so you could return within 4 – 6 weeks. For fitness competitors who are competing in federations like the INBA, IFBB, WBFF or NABBA, we suggest monthly scans for 12 or 16 weeks leading up to the comp. We offer a TRI 3-pack, and an even better value 6-pack of scans here.

If you’re not sure, ask us what is the best time frame for you.

  • Who else is using it?

The InBody technology is used in most countries around the world. A few key names you may have heard of who utilize the InBody scanner are the LA Lakers, Porsche Racing and Red Bull.

These elite centres know what it takes to make leading athletes and they choose InBody to easily and quickly assess their teams. It is a key piece of equipment used in the assessment, progress and development of their athletes.

“I can’t get the best out of them unless I have the best equipment, and in terms of trying to determine a player’s physiological make up, it doesn’t get any better than the InBody.”

Gary Vitti, Head fitness coach for the Los Angeles Lakers

“The InBody machine is a key piece of equipment for us.”

    Porsche Human Performance
  • What do I wear? Do I have to take my clothes off?

You can keep your clothes on apart from your shoes and socks. This is so that the gentle electrical current can conduct through your palms and soles.

We do suggest that you wear lightweight clothing such as shorts and a t-shirt. We may ask you to remove heavy jackets and jumpers. Wearing jeans is not ideal.

Metallic jewelry may interfere with the machine so is best avoided and we may as that you remove it prior to scanning.

  • Is it harmful to my body?

The InBody machine is safe to use for anyone aged 3 to 103 and beyond. Gentle electrical currents of various frequencies (wavelength or speed) are passed through the body. It’s also safe to use while pregnant although you may prefer not to use it during the first trimester of pregnancy anyway.

Some other machines may use radiation and we are happy to say that we don’t.

  • What is visceral fat?

Visceral fat is the fat located in the abdomen and which surrounds the organs. It is deep under the surface and lies below the stomach muscles. This is different to the subcutaneous fat, which is the fat you can grab on your tummy.

Visceral fat is a key player in a vast number of health problems including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. Visceral fat can be reduced with a good exercise program and healthy eating over a long period of time. There are numerous articles and lots of information available on the internet about visceral fat, it’s health risks and how to reduce it.

This is the fat you cannot see in the mirror, but it is the most dangerous. The InBody scanner gives you a score on a scale of 1 – 9 for how much visceral fat you have. The lower the score the better.

  • Is it better before or after exercise?

Before exercise or on a rest day is best. If you do your scan straight after vigorous exercise then some measures such as body water will be skewed.

  • What can I do to ensure the most accurate reading?

We suggest avoid having your scan if you have exercised within an hour or after a big meal. It’s best if you can use the toilet before having your scan. Avoid metal jewelry and underwire bras where possible.

When you’re having your scan, follow the instructions given to you. If you can stay still and not talk for about 45 seconds then you’re good to go.

  • I’m out of shape and haven’t been eating the best, should I wait until I get fit again?

Absolutely not! Now is the best time to do it! In fact, having your scan before you make any changes is good as it gives you your ‘untrained’ baseline and means you’ve got lots of room for improvement before your next scan.

  • How do I get bioXscan at my gym?

If you think having us and our fancy machine at your gym is a good idea, just show your scan to the gym owner or manager and pass on our details.

PS: Thank you and we hope to see you there!

  • Can I take my scan to my doctor / chiropractor / physiotherapist / PT /weight loss consultant etc?

Yes you can. While they may not have seen an InBody scan before, they will be able to make sense of most of it, especially if you take your interpretation guide with you.

If your specialist has further questions, they are more than welcome to contact us here.

  • Can I get a scan if I have a pacemaker?

Unfortunately you can’t. We would hate to interfere with your rhythm.

Corporate FAQs

  • Do you do corporate deals?

Yes we do. We can help with your staff wellness program and we can also do a body composition scan as part of work health checks.

Check out our corporate packages here.

  • I’d like my staff to have a scan at our premises. Can we do this?

Yes. We are mobile and for groups of 15 or more, we can come to you. The set up is very simple and takes around 20 minutes to set up. All we require is a few square metres of space near a power point and a space to provide feedback.

  • I’m a Personal Trainer, how can I use the scans with my clients?

The InBody scan is a fantastic tool to use with your clients. You can use it to monitor your training program and use it to set specific goals eg. Around body fat percentage, or muscle gain for specific body parts.

A lot of personal trainers will get their clients to do a scan at regular intervals eg. Every 4 – 8 weeks. This is a sure fire way to keep your client accountable and it’s also great evidence for what an effective trainer you are as the results are right there!

  • I’m a health or medical practitioner or weight loss consultant, how can this benefit my clients?

If you are advising, mentoring or coaching clients in regards to their diet, lifestyle choices or other aspects of health and wellness, the InBody scan is a fantastic tool to use. Rather than just ‘weighing in’, you can use the in depth data and results provided to monitor your clients progress specifically around what you’re working with them on. This could be body fat percentage, visceral fat level, bone mineral content, body balance in terms of muscle, and fat loss.

Once your clients have their scan and they understand what’s going on inside their body, they are much more likely to stick to their commitments and persist with any lifestyle changes necessary, especially if they are having regular scans.

It can be used as a motivational tool and for personal challenges. The possibilities are endless. We can help you with how you can use the InBody scans within your existing business. Please contact us and we will be in touch.

  • Can we hire your machine for our medical/research facility?

We can hire our machine out to hospitals, research facilities and certain other institutions. We provide setup and pack up and all materials. All packages include free product training.
